Exposed to the prevailing winds and thus wetter, the East Coast is a landscape of luxuriant forests lining a narrow coastal strip set between the mountains and the ocean.

The population, most of which is kanak, lives there in the heart of tropical setting with a succession of lush valleys and waterfalls, large estuaries and ever-present rivers.

Here the main actitivies are agriculture, subsistence and market gardening, and fishing, both in the lagoon and on the coast, not to mention mining, which leaves its indelible mark, as it does throughout the country.
